SJC Airport Transportation: How Far Is SJC from Sunnyvale?

San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is in San José, California. For a road trip to Sunnyvale, the airport is about a 33-minute drive from Cherry Orchard Inn, a useful reference if you’re arranging a ride after landing.

Walking is listed at about 140 minutes, so it is a much longer option than driving. For most arrivals, the practical choice is between a road transfer and public transit: Route 60 links SJC with Santa Clara Transit Center, where you can transfer to Caltrain for Sunnyvale.

Driving, Taxi, and Rideshare Options

Driving, Taxi, and Rideshare Options

Taxi

On-demand taxis pick up at Terminal A, Stop 2, and Terminal B, Stop 1. If you have arranged a taxi in advance, pickup is at Terminal A, Stop 3, or Terminal B, Stop 11. SJC lists metered rates of $15.00 for the first mile, plus $4.00 for each additional mile and $1.00 per minute of waiting time.

SJC says taxis can transport passengers using folding wheelchairs at no extra charge. Wheelchair-accessible taxi vans are also available at no extra charge, and advance notice is recommended.

App-based rideshare

At Terminal A, app-based rideshares pick up at the Arrivals curb, Stop 1. At Terminal B, Uber uses Stops 8 and 9; Lyft and Wingz use Stop 10. Rideshares may drop passengers at the departures curb of either terminal.

Door-to-door shuttle

On-demand shuttle pickup is at Terminal A, Stop 2, and Terminal B, Stop 1. Pre-arranged shuttle pickups use Terminal A, Stop 3, and Terminal B, Stop 11. SJC says door-to-door shuttles transport passengers using folding wheelchairs at no extra charge.

These options use different pickup points, so check your terminal and arrangement before walking out to the curb. The airport’s shuttle buses are a separate service: they connect the terminals with Economy Lot 1 and the Rental Car Center, rather than serving as the door-to-door trip to Sunnyvale.

SJC says those airport shuttles are wheelchair accessible and arrive every 7 to 10 minutes, operating 24 hours per day.

Public Transit from SJC to Sunnyvale

Public Transit from SJC to Sunnyvale

For a transit trip, take VTA Route 60—the Airport Flyer—from SJC to Santa Clara Transit Center, then transfer to Caltrain toward Sunnyvale. Caltrain identifies Santa Clara as the airport connection served by Route 60.

Route 60 serves Terminal A at Stop 7 and Terminal B at Stop 5. It runs between the airport, Milpitas BART and Winchester Station, with Santa Clara Transit Center among its published stops. When boarding at SJC, the bus is free in either direction.

The airport says fares apply for VTA Blue and Green light rail; Caltrain fare information is available separately, and the airport and route information here does not specify the fare for the Santa Clara-to-Sunnyvale train trip.

VTA lists separate schedules for weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and holidays, as well as northbound and southbound service. Its schedule advises arriving at the stop at least five minutes before the bus and notes that times are approximate. Plan the transfer around the timetable rather than assuming a particular connection.

Choosing a Route for Your Arrival

A taxi, rideshare or door-to-door shuttle takes you from the airport curb toward Sunnyvale without the Route 60–Caltrain transfer. If you choose one, match the pickup point to your terminal and whether the ride is on demand or pre-arranged.

Public transit gives you a defined connection: Route 60 to Santa Clara Transit Center, then Caltrain toward Sunnyvale. It involves a change between services, so check both schedules and allow time for the transfer. Remember that the Route 60 bus is free when boarding at SJC, but that does not establish the fare for the Caltrain leg.

If you are meeting someone or changing terminals, SJC’s own shuttle buses connect the terminals, Economy Lot 1 and the Rental Car Center. They are not the same service as a door-to-door shuttle to Sunnyvale.

Checking Current Service and Travel Conditions

Pickup points, timetables and fares can affect which option works for your arrival. Check the official site before you go: use VTA’s Route 60 schedule for service times and Caltrain’s fares information for the train fare. Confirm your terminal’s ground-transport pickup point with San José Mineta International Airport, especially if you have booked a pre-arranged ride.

For walking access around the airport, SJC directs pedestrians to Airport Parkway and marked crosswalks across Airport Boulevard. The airport says there is no direct pedestrian or bicycle access via Skyport Drive for safety reasons.
